A mobile mortar position that took advantage of its firepower and mobility

The U.S. Army noticed the half-track's excellent off-road performance and began researching it in the late 1920s, and mechanization of the army became important in World War II. ・When it came to urgent issues, more than 40,000 half-tracks such as the M2 and M3 series were produced during the war. Also, self-propelled artillery equipped with various firearms was produced in large quantities using the half-track chassis. The M21 motor carrier, which was legalized in June 1943, is one of them. It uses the chassis of the M3 half-track and is equipped with an 81mm mortar in the open-top fighting compartment. The leg mount of this mortar is attached to the fighting compartment floor. The M21 was unique in that it was placed on a rail and had a firing angle of 60 degrees left and right, allowing it to be fired directly from above the vehicle. In addition, it was equipped with a 12.7mm Browning heavy machine gun, and also carried a bazooka, numerous shells, and mines. It can truly be called a moving mortar position, and its firepower and mobility were used to make use of its firepower and mobility in battles such as the Battle of Okinawa. It was also used for training purposes for a long time after the war until around 1960.
